    Pat’s Road Rash

    Wednesday, July 25th, 2007

Pat Benson is now at home healing from his fractured skull, broken collarbone and severe road rash. His picture is a powerful reminder to all of us why wearing a helmet is essential… even on a short around the block ride as he was doing.
Glad you’re on the mend, Pat.

    Pat Crashed

    Sunday, July 22nd, 2007

Just heard from the wife of Pat Benson, one of the regulars here who did all our training rides and just returned from the Michigander.
Pat crashed on his bike today and is in Troy Beaumont Hospital. Wife Val says he has a fractured skull, fractured left clavicle and lots of road rash “on his bald […]

    Michigander 2007

    Sunday, July 22nd, 2007

Back from the Michigander with lots of new friends and lots of memories. You can see all the still pictures to the left on my Flikr page.
I did videos every day, too. They’re on the Detroit Free Press site right now but I’ll move them to YouTube later so they’ll be evergreen. If you want […]

    Pre-ride training

    Tuesday, July 10th, 2007

The Michigander begins Saturday and I’m ready. Always wonder before a long ride like this how I should train this last week.  Back when I was a runner, we always backed down the last few days.
Wonder if that makes sense with the Michigander? My route is to train as normal through Wednesday, get the bike […]

    7/7/7 “Ride with Mike”

A week before the Michigander cross-state bicycle tour, a group of us gathered for a long training ride that took us from Rochester through Rochester Hills, Auburn Hills, Bloomfield Township and into Pontiac on the Clinton River Trail.
We rode until the surface turned to ballast - large fist-sized rocks. Meet some of the […]

    7/7/7 Ride

    Saturday, July 7th, 2007

It was the Clinton River Trail from Rochester across I-75 into Bloomfield Township this morning as a group of us prepared for next week’s Michigander. Here we are atop the trail’s I-75 overpass. I’ll put up a video by Monday.
By the way, the photo (click to enlarge) was shot with my new iPhone.

Hope everyone is having a great 4th of July.
The Michigander is ten days away today? Is everyone ready?
Let's do a long training ride Saturday. I have to be at a wedding in the afternoon so I'd like to start earlier than we have… around 7am.
Here's a video below that suggests some ride locations. […]

    Gu - But what flavor?

    Friday, June 22nd, 2007

These long bicycle rides as I train for the Michigander are leaving me pretty zapped. Time for Gu, that nutritional gel that everyone raves about.
I priced it at the local health store: Yikes! They wanted $1.49 each. Performance sells it for under a buck a package when bought in a 24 pack. But what […]

    Polly Ann Trail anyone?

    Wednesday, June 20th, 2007

I’m considering a long ride Saturday on the Polly Ann Trail. Last time I rode it a couple years ago, it was a disaster with huge rocks and a really bad surface. I hear it has crushed limestone now, but don’t know how much of it has such a surface and how long a ride […]

    Be careful in the heat

    Tuesday, June 19th, 2007

In my part of the country, we’ve had a real heat wave going, with temps in the mid-90s with high humidity.
I just heard from a friend who called to tell me that the wife of a mutual friend was bicycling this afternoon along the Paint Creek Trail. She had a heart attack and died. I […]
