Biking Across America in Winter Time
By Lance Winslow
For those that planned to bike across the United States of America in the wintertime I have some advice for you. You should take a route of lower latitude and that is to say below Northern California, Colorado, Kansas, Kentucky, West Virginia and Virginia.

You see when you cross the United States by bicycle even if you are a very excellent writer it will take you three to four weeks minimum and that means you'll get quite a few storms because the average storm in the wintertime takes three to four days to cross the United States. It is not like you can wait for every single storm or cold snap to pass you and therefore it pays to take a lower latitude route.
One interesting route is to go from San Diego into Arizona and across the bottom of New Mexico into the Texas plains and then in across Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama into either Georgia or Florida. A good place to hit the coast might be savanna Georgia or Jacksonville, Florida.
If you get caught in a high mountain pass in the wintertime you can expect to be 2° per thousand foot cooler up an altitude and you will also be dealing with the wind chill factor through the mountains. In the wintertime it makes sense to go from west to east because that is the way the wind blows and this will prevent additional wind chill from making you too cold. Please consider all this in 2006.
