Memorial Day ride
By mike | May 28, 2007
Got up early this morning hoping to get uncrowded trails. Didn’t happen.
I took parts of three trails to get a 36-miler in (my longest of the season) and all were jammed with bikers, runners, hikers, strollers, kids on training wheels, roller bladers. It was like, finally, after two days of rain, we got a beautifyl warm sunny day that does justice to the onofficial start of summer significance of the long holiday weekend. And everyone headed for the trails.
I was pretty bonked at the end. Didn’t take enough water and packed no protein. Planned to do just 15 but it was so gorgeous I just kept going.
Two things though: Can’t understand why anyone would ride a bike without a safety helmet. Nor is it smart to bike while listening to an iPod. Saw way too many people today doing that. Are these folks just stupid?

If you ask me, you’re a fool to do any sort of ride without head gear.. Brain buckets are a safety item that is worth every penny, especially considering the risk of a closed head injury..
